The Trust's Take on DC

Happy October!

This past weekend my dad and sister flew out from San Diego to visit us in D.C. It's been almost a week since they left and I'm still sore :). We biked 10+ miles, walked way too many miles to count, and explored every possible area of DC in 3 days. It was an incredible weekend.

On Saturday, we rented bikes and biked past the National Mall, stopped by the Lincoln Memorial, then crossed the Potomac River to Virginia and biked to Alexandria, where we stopped for lunch. We biked on the Mt. Vernon trail, which goes alongside the Potomac river. It was very beautiful. Even though it was very windy and a little cold, the bike ride was very fun!

On the way back from Alexandria, we stopped in Rosslyn and walked to Teddy Roosevelt Island, which is a hidden treasure in DC. It's a big island with a huge statue of Teddy, surrounded by walls with sayings about nature, mankind, etc... It was very relaxing and beautiful.

We started bright and early Sunday morning by heading toward the National Mall. We happened to walk right into the White House Garden Tours - offered 2 times a year. We got to take our cameras/bags right on to the White House grounds. We saw the Oval Office from the outside and an intern pointed out the chopper landing area and press room. We saw the First Lady's Garden Kitchen (and the Presidential beehive), and of course, Sasha and Malia's playground. It was amazing walking right up to the White House!

We went to the top of the Washington Monument to check out the view and then walked to the Jefferson Memorial. We hopped on the DC Trolley Tour and rode it all over DC - all the way up to Adams Morgan and the National Cathedral (stunning!) and then we hopped off in Georgetown, which was very crowded. In the evening, we went over to my dad's hotel to watch the Redskins take on the Indianapolis Colts.

When Monday morning rolled around and we could barely move, we got up early and headed to the Library of Congress. It has beautiful renaissance style architecture and paintings inside. Since there weren't any tours operating and my dad had already visited the Library, my dad became our tour guide. We got to see Jefferson's library of 6,500 books and original copies of the drafts of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence (with many words crossed out and added in).

We walked in an underground tunnel to the Capital. We visited the House of Representatives gallery and then took a tour. We saw the old Senate chambers and the inside of the giant dome.

And we weren't done yet! We walked to the Air and Space museum and toured it. My sister and I had fun in the kids zone where we got to play with all of the exhibits. We looked back to see my dad and Trev passed out on a bench. It was quite a weekend!

I am so glad that you got to take a tour of the White House Gardens. I was lucky enough to get to do that last year and it was pretty awesome. I hope you and Trevor keep having a blast in DC. There is so much to do.
